We came across this story about a fire captain that's sailing a 17 ft wooden sailboat from Washington D.C. to New York hoping to raise money and awareness for Autism. It's a 425 mile journey and he'll be escorted  along the way by Coast Guard and local emergency services.

﻿﻿﻿﻿﻿﻿ The RC44's have come to San Diego this week, marking the first major international regatta for this sailing town since Coutts swept Conner in the America's Cup 16 years ago.

The event is the The Oracle RC44 Cup, and it is sailed in high-performance, 44-foot sloops co-designed by Coutts. Thomas is an avid sailor from Ocean County NJ, whose journey into sailing started when he was finishing up his Chemo-Therapy. He is 14 years old and is a Non-Hodgkin’s Peripheral t-cell survivor.

T’s parents don’t sail, but when Thomas saw kids his own age sailing by themselves in opti’s, he asked them if he could try it. Led by British explorer, David de Rothschild, Plastiki recently set sail on an 11,000 mile journey across the Pacific to Sydney from San Francisco. The boat is powered by natural energy from wind and solar panels.

As the AC boats drifted off the coast of Valencia today (actually they never left the dock) waiting to start the 33rd America's Cup, Oracle helmsman  James Spithill told the press that he got his pilot's license to help him sail the giant trimaran.

Now there's a cool App for this. It's called WindMeter and it's simple -  point your iPhone into the wind and push Get Wind! The wait a few seconds and push Got Wind! The final reading is the average wind speed for the period.
