A "Shout-Out" to Smyrna - The Lipton Cup

The attached photos were submitted by “Yegadd” at Smyrna Yacht Club. Thanks.

They are taken from the recent Lipton Cup event. For those of you who don’t know about The Lipton Cup, it is a great event with a storied past. Smyrna YC has been hosting international regattas (power and sail) since the early 1930’s. In those days, 20,000+ spectators would come out to watch. (Seriously! Those were the days). During this era in sport, Sir Thomas Lipton donated a beautiful sterling cup to perpetuate the sport of yacht racing in Central Florida. SYC adopted the cup in the early 1930’s to preserve the International Lipton Cup Regattas. The cup went missing for about 40 years (apparently it was put in a vault for safe-keeping during WWII and was not found again until 1982) and ILC events were held sporadically.

The Lipton Cup now proudly resides in the trophy case of SYC and the club, intent on preserving its tradition, revived the prestigious Lipton Cup Regatta in 2004.

This event is open to all who love the sailing lifestyle and like to share in a piece of maritime history. Thanks to all the boaters and volunteers (power and sail) who make it happen. -SF
