Clean Regatta Program Increases Sailing Environmental Awareness

SailFast is a huge fan of the growing Clean Regattas program by Sailors for the Sea. The Clean Regattas program aims to promote environmentally friendly procedures at sailing events to increase environmental awareness and protection throughout the sailing community.

The “Clean Regattas is a third party certification program that helps regattas, yacht clubs and sailing programs voluntarily achieve higher environmental standards. Participants have the option of choosing a Bronze, Silver or Gold level of engagement, and work to fulfill each of the requirements necessary to be certified at that level. Sailors for the Sea provides support and materials, and the final certification that a club or event is a Clean Regatta.”

The Clean Regattas program has already reached events all over the US such as Nantucket Raceweek, Shields Class National Championship, and the Volvo Ocean Race at Fan Pier in Boston. Simple improvements on sailing’s environmental impact, such as reducing reliance on plastic water bottles and imposing recycling programs, have created ripple effects throughout the sailing community and the efforts of Sailors for the Sea are already being felt.

Whether you’re an environmentalist or just the average sailor, the Clean Regattas program is easily accessible and available for any sailors, yacht club or event. Check out more information on how to get involved and upcoming Clean Regattas at the Sailors for the Sea website: http://sailorsforthesea.org/programs-and-projects/clean-regattas.aspx.

This program is actually a good sign that people are responding the right way to the call of our environment.
I think that when we do these efforts, we are not only protecting the sea, land, air or animals, but also the people who coexist with those.
