Message In A Bottle

It was only a matter of time before we posted on the voyage of the Plastiki - a 60-foot catamaran made of 12,000+ plastic bottles and other recyclable materials.

Led by British explorer, David de Rothschild, Plastiki recently set sail on an 11,000 mile journey across the Pacific to Sydney from San Francisco. The boat is powered by natural energy from wind and solar panels.

Their goal is to raise awareness of marine pollution and the amount of waste in our oceans, as well as other environmental issues like ocean acidification. A planned highlight of the trip (if you can call it that) is to sail across the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a large field of floating debris located between California and Hawaii.

As of this post, the crew of Plastiki have traveled 1501 nautical miles over 18 days. They are currently moving at 4.3kts.

There's lots of good information on their blog ( http://www.theplastiki.com/blog/) for those who are interested.
